The KGB's biggest "useful idiot" before DJT -- J. Edgar Hoover
Other than several "moles" in the CIA, the man most responsible for the KGB's successfully zombifying the Agency and the FBI was “Communist fighter” J. Edgar Hoover.
By his believing that:
1) Aleksei Kulak (FEDORA) and Dmitry Polyakov (TOP HAT) were true informants,
2) that KGB true-defector Anatoliy Golitsyn was a false defector, and
3) that false defector Yuri Nosenko was a true defector,
FBI Director Hoover unwittingly enabled the KGB to successfully wage “The Sting”-like strategic deception counterintelligence operations against our intelligence agencies and those of our NATO allies.
For details, read:
1) Edward J. Epstein’s 1989 book, Deception,
2) Mark Riebling’s 1994 book, Wedge, and
3) Tennent H. Bagley’s 2007 book, Spy Wars.
They can be read for free by googling:

3) “spy wars” archive.
